AUGUST 2011

August was a very busy month with Annabelle gone at Lake Beauty Bible Camp (pictures to come) and our August camping trip to Split Rock.  Camping was divine...a relaxing week of togetherness our family needed!

Nathaniel's First Lego League is underway - meeting in our basement 2 times a week until the season wraps in December.  This was the parent information meeting, and we were lucky to have a veteran graduate of the FLL program come to speak to the kids.

The competition mat and Legos arrived for First Lego League - Nathaniel busily sorting them by colors.

Stone Chairs on Pebble Beach.  Someone crafts these awesome chairs out of rock - this was a new one this year.  We dubbed it "The Throne" due to its grand stature!

The Throne.

Snacking on raspberries.

We spotted 3 juvenile eagles along the Split Rock River.  They were all perched in trees - perhaps waiting for food to return.  They were making cries as if waiting for mom to return.

Nathaniel at falls along Split Rock river....moments before he stepped into a yellow jacket nest while looking nearby for a stick.  He was swarmed and stung 10 times - 2 in the eye.  His eye was swollen shut for most of the week - as you will see in the pictures.

Annabelle, Chris and Nathaniel on top of an island near the Split Rock.

Day Hill Beach.

Breakfast at camp - site #4

A crawly visitor hitchhiked on Chris.

Nathaniel swimming in the Baptism River.

More Baptism River swimming.

Swimming area where the Baptism River flows into Lake Superior.  Chris and Nathaniel are on the right....you can see their 2 heads.

Planning our hike for the day while studying the maps.  Nathaniel's  eye still swollen shut from the yellow jacket sting 2 days before.

More raspberry picking along the Gitchi Gammi.

Lake Superior overlook

Awesome picnic spot - facing the lake - see next picture.

View from the picnic hammock.

One of our new hikes - Christmas Tree Ridge.  Pretty!

The biting flies were maddening!

Gross!  Biting flies everywhere on the beach.

Another new hike - Fault Line Ridge.  We explored new inland paths since the biting flies were worse at the lakeshore.

Fault Line Ridge Trail.

The Cascades at George Crosby Manitou State Park.

More of the Cascades.

Gorgeous view of the Manitou river before the Cascades.

Caribou Falls

Water was low enough we could wade right in.

Gorgeous overlook to Lake Superior (faintly visible above treeline) at Caribou Falls.

Signing the Superior Hiking Trail guest book along the trail.

Temperance River.

Most of the remaining pictures were taken by Annabelle and Nathaniel for an upcoming web creative they are making called "The Superior Project"  Enjoy the gorgeous scenery.

A rare picture of Chris and I together!

Outrageous Raspberries!

My reading time on the beach.
