Split Rock Lighthouse/Madeline Island June 28 - July 3, 2007

Gooseberry falls - we stopped by for some hiking on our way to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park Campground.

A timberwolf at the nature center at Gooseberry.  It looks just like Nathaniel's favorite stuffed animal "Husky"

Sunset and moonrise (that is the moon you see) at Split Rock Lighthouse.

Lake Superior's water level is low this year - so we were able to climb on rocks that are normally under water.  These rocks lead to Ellington Island.

Annabelle and Nathaniel rest on a bench on the trail - overlooking Lake Superior.

A pebble beach where we picnicked the first day.

Annabelle found a shallow pool with hundreds of tadpoles.

A larger tadpole we caught and released on the Split Rock River.

Our annual climb to the top of Day Hill.  that is the lighthouse in the background.

Another pebble beach on the Day Hill trail that we picnicked on.

A beach we just discovered this year - our new favorite perhaps.

Annabelle perched on a rock trying not to get wet from the surf.

The view of the lighthouse from the back of Ellington Island.  We were only able to hike there this year due to the low level of Lake Superior. These rocks are usually covered by water.

The last night at our campsite at Split Rock.

On the ferry boat that carried us and our van to Madeline Island.

Madeline Island - here we come!  Seated on the deck of the ferry.

Chris by the car on the ferry.

The beach at Big Bay State Park on our first night at Madeline Island.  It was cold!

Our first full day at Madeline Island was cold and wet.  We hiked anyway - here we are seeking shelter from the rain under a rock by the beach.

Picnicking under a tree to get out of the rain on the trail Monday.  Monday was cold, wet and miserable.  It was definitely my grumpy day - an emotion which quickly spread through the group!

Hiking through the woods at Big Bay State Park - back to our campsite.

Reading in the tent during an afternoon rainshower.

Playing on the beach.

We caught a crayfish in the shallow water of the Big Bay.

The sun finally appeared our last day.  We had a picnic lunch on the beach,
