Washington D.C. - February 2009

We caught a late flight into D.C. on Friday night, arriving at the hotel after midnight.  Day 1 was the next day, Saturday.  It was a whirlwind 3 days of sightseeing, before we flew to Florida on Tuesday. DAY 1  American History Museum, Capitol Building and Supreme Court (outside only), U.S. Botanic Gardens, Hirshhorn Sculpture Museum, Natural History Museum.

Outside our hotel on K and 15th Streets, about 6 blocks from the White House.

At the Smithsonian Museum of American History.  Annabelle in front of the famous lunch counter that was the sight of the "sit-ins" during the Civil Rights Movement.

In front of the Capitol Building, at the end of the National Mall.

Inside the U.S. Botanical Gardens.

The spider sculpture outside the Hirshhorn Sculpture Museum, everyone's favorite museum.

Annabelle with an Alexander Calder sculpture...she is interested in his work because of the book, "The Calder Game",

Annabelle with a sculpture made of a book, magnets and straight pins.

"The Big Man" sculpture by Ron Mueck, a very amazing sculpture.  I couldn't show the whole thing, because he is very naked!

DAY 2  A huge day.  White House (outside only), Air and Space Museum, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Castle and 3 mile memorial walk: Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Roosevelt Memorial and Jefferson Memorial.  Plus the 15 block walk to the hotel...I'd guess we hiked a good 8 miles that day.

Air and Space Museum...Nathaniel liked "flying" this plane in the "How Things Fly" Exhibit.

Reading about the space shuttle.  We were hoping to see one launch from Kennedy Space Center during our time in Florida, but the launch was delayed.

Walking through the space module.

Eating lunch at the McDonalds at the Air and Space Museum.

Nathaniel at the National Gallery of Art.  He waited very patiently as I looked at hundreds of pieces.  He and I chilled out in the lobby while Annabelle and Dad took a turn looking at a photography exhibit.
